A small tree; young branches tomentose,
older glabrous; leaves membranous, oblong-lanceolate 4-7 in. by
1-1 3/4 in; flowers 2-4, on lateral pedicle, 1/2 in. long elongated
and becoming thick and woody in fruit. Sepals small ovate, acute,
tomentose. Petals shorter than the sepals, in 2-series, tomentose
on both surfaces. Fruit 4-6 in. diam., sub-globose or sometimes
heart shaped, roughish outside yellow or yellowish red when ripe.
Differs from A. squamosa in teh large fruit, in the large and
more pointed leaves and in the greater number of veins.

Indigenuous of West Indies but cultivated mostly in gardens and
parks Fruits ripen from February to March.
